Located in the Southern end of the Burgundy wine region, the Beaujolais is officially part of the later. However, the wines produced there don’t have much in common with their Burgundy neighbors. Released for sale on the third Thursday of November, the “Beaujolais Nouveau” is definitely the main reason of the Beaujolais worldwide reputation.
Covering the whole region, Beaujolais AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controlée or Officially delineated wine zones) is the most extended appellation and refers to all basic Beaujolais wines. Beaujolais Supérieur concerns wines with a higher alcoholic degree. 39 communes of the Northern region share the Beaujolais-Villages appellation. The best 10 Villages have their own ACs and often the name "Beaujolais" doesn't appear on the label. These last wines are known as the "Crus": Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Morgon, St-Amour, Côte de Brouilly, Moulin-à-Vent, Réginié, Juliénas.
There is a significant difference between ordinary Beaujolais and the Crus. Unlike the Beaujolais and the Beaujolais Villages, the Crus are often age-worthy. Thus, it would be unfair to limit the Beaujolais to its reputation of primeur wine, fruity, quaffable and easy-to-drink. Lately victim of its own success, the Beaujolais went through an identity crisis. Nonetheless, some vintners coped with the new consumption expectations and successfully achieved the alliance of delicacy and strength whilst keeping the inherent qualities of the Gamay grape which is the Beaujolais exclusive varietal.
